The New England Orienteering Club

Nobscot Scout Reservation, Sudbury, MA
October 16, 2016
Meet Director: Bo Neilsen

With about 120 registered starts and up toward 150 active participants the October 16th meet at the Nobscot Scout Reservation in Sudbury proved once again to be a popular orienteering destination. The combination of sunny weather and New England fall foliage at it’s finest made for a wonderful setting and quite a few people were lingering by the picnic tables after their run, just to enjoy the day.

Due to the bush fire this summer, we were asked to stay out of the south part of the woods, and for most courses this meant more controls and loops than is typical for this terrain. Still, it was a pleasure to see only a few starts did not finish and many opted to go out on a second course. Particularly impressive were the several MIT students who went from first time orienteering on a white course to comfortably completing the brown course!

As the results reveal, the list of club affiliations for the event was impressive. In addition to our regular NEOC and CSU participants, we had representatives for out-of-state clubs EMPO, QOC, UNO, LROC, GMOC and WCOC, as well as out-of-country TSK from Sweden! Thanks all for coming!

Finally, a big thank you to all who volunteered their time. To have such a fine crew of capable people know what to do and when to do it makes a great experience possible for everyone, the meet director included.

Dorina Nimigean, Xavier Fradera, Sylvie Guichard and Pelle Wahlstrom made the initial rush at registration run smoothly while Tim Parson, Jeff Saeger, Judith Sapinski and Dean Sturtevant all started early and made the later arrivals feel welcome. In addition to assisting with the registration, Pete Lane and Ian Smith both provided instruction to scout groups and MIT students, while Tim Booth and Jim Paschetto handled the timing aspects with their usual expertise. At the end of the day, Joanne Sankus graciously helped return equipment, while Ian Smith and Tim Pachetto assisted with control pickup.

Lost and Found: A credit card was found in the woods and turned in at the registration. If you think it might be yours, please contact the meet director.
