Wanderings BYOM, Watertown, MA
August 29 - September 5, 2022
Meet Director: Jim Crawford
We had a good bunch of loyal Wanderers come back for another year's challenge, this time centered in Watertown but including Belmont, Cambridge, Newton, and Waltham. 29 participants have reported their runs to me. If anybody else tried it, please send me a note, even if you don't care about timing or scores. The weather was for the most part sunny and hot during the week, but some runners compensated by starting around 6 A.M. The Campbells put it off until the last day when it rained, and had to suffer through writing on wet paper with a crayon.
Several people deserve special mention. Adventure racers Nicki Driscoll, Cayla Marvil, and Jeff O'Connor took top honors in the Combo by going to all but 3 of the non-Cemetery controls. And if they had not made a couple of costly mistakes, they could have gotten all but 1 of the controls. Rick Kielty once again did the Combo in the dark and came in 2nd place. Aaron Aaker is training for an ultra marathon, so he went out Saturday on foot for 5 hours and collected half of the controls, and then went out again on Sunday to find all of the remaining controls, including the Cemetery controls. So he spent 9 1/2 hours over the two days and traveled 46 miles. Finally, Jason DeJoannis showed everybody what a speed demon can do by running 24.7 miles over 3 hrs 10 minutes, taking first in the foot-O division. When you consider all of the controls he went to at the top of steep hills, and the amount of time he was not moving (17 min according to his gps track), he was really moving.
I have to mention two problems with the course. As always, there was construction near one of the controls (northwest of #38), and the two runners that tried going from there to #60 got trapped by a construction fence and had to backtrack. The second problem was with control #35. The 5 people who went during the week found it ok. However the sign that was mentioned on the clue sheet must have been removed by the weekend, because the 3 runners who went for it over the weekend could not find the sign, and I confirmed the sign was gone. I gave everybody credit for it, although I'm sorry I can't give you back some extra time.
Finally, I would encourage anybody who did not do the Mt. Auburn Cemetery controls to give them a try. The course is "permanent", so can be done any time of the year. The view from the tower is exceptional, and there are always beautiful flowers, bushes, trees, and birds. One of the orienteers got to see a hawk kill and eat a squirrel near control #10.
In the following tables, a '*' after a score indicates penalty points were subtracted.
