Meet Director: Jim Paschetto

A day of "not terrible" weather, on a map "not too far" for many NEOCers, brought out a solid crowd—over 100 starts! I expected light attendance because we were competing with the national ranking event at West Point, but noooo! We ran out of Green maps and had to beg used maps from finishers.

 It was great to see the JROTC group from Madison Park Tech Voc High out again. Many of them moving up to the Yellow course. ...and they brought donuts!  Thanks! Look for them in the results from club MCJROTC.

We also had a "birthday-O" for Ms. Kelly and her adventurous friends, nine- and ten-year olds. It's a special person who asks to have an orienteering party for her birthday. (Reminds me of the wedding-shower-on-mountain-bikes I encountered in the Colorado Rockies, but that's another story.) I hope they all had a fun day out and will return to orienteer again. Many thanks to Donn Springer for jumping in to instruct them.

Lots of help kept chaos to a minimum. It would take a page to detail everyone's contributions, but I will mention Bill Binette who was practically co-director: vetting courses; hanging controls; helping with set-up, registration, & photography; and collecting a control. Lots more help came from Karen Yeowell, Mark O'Connell, Bo Nielsen, Pelle Wåhlström, Kelly Guarino, Brett & Barb Anderson, and Andy McIlvaine. Many of these folks helped early, then returned from an advanced course with wet feet to wait in the chill until all the other runners were in, only to go out again to collect controls. This is what makes NEOC a great club! Thanks to all of you.

Special mention to Karen Yeowell who paused on her Red course to help a lost & distraught Yellow runner. Also to Sam Levitin who spotted a beautiful thumb-compass in the leaves, then toted it through the bulk of his Red course to deliver it to registration. Its owner is very appreciative!
