Prospect Hill, Waltham, MA
October 8, 2016
Meet Director: Pelle Wahlstrom
Prospect Hill is always a popular location for beginners and families, because of its easy access. The weather was very nice and attracted a lot of people (about 120 people, many children added to this).
We were really lucky, because the next day was all rain. Gabriel Bronk laid out the courses (except white). The courses at Prospect Hill can’t be very difficult and Green is the longest that is possible. Green was the most popular cause (31 runners). It was a good run with a lot of ups and downs.
Yellow was somewhat challenging judging from the number of DNFs, probably because a couple of path choices were not so evident. For the water control the map included a no longer existing path confusing some people.
We had a distinctive international flavor to the race. The winner on Green (by far) was from Switzerland. One Brazilian participated on the Green. He is on a visit in Boston and even had his club T-shirt inscribed with Orientacao and other Portuguese words. We also had a visiting professor from Austria participating, and finally when we were almost ready to pack up, a car pulled up with 2 orienteers from Sweden on vacation staying at a hotel at Totten Pond Road. They had seen the O-sign on Totten Pond Road and followed them. They were from Rehns BK (Bollnaes Sweden), an elite club. They got the green map and were going to check it out the next day.
A lot of helpers made the meet successful:
Gabriel Bronk laid out the courses and helped with the computer, Marcia Steere, Kristin Hall, Bridget Hall and Dave Kehs helped with registration,
Bud O’Leary got maps printed for White and Yellow and Tim Booth was indispensable on the computer and helping restarting the generator when it ran out of fuel.
Mishaps: green control 5 was misplaced (quickly fixed), the results printer didn’t work for a long time,
The last control on white was missing when I went to pick it up. Bill Binette got a stick that
stopped working and did not get a proper result.
