Meet Director:  Pia Webb

It was a beautiful, sunny and crisp, spring day at Menotomy Rocks Park in Arlington; a nice change from the wet weather of last weekend. Thanks to many spreading the word of orienteering among friends and on social media, we had what felt like record numbers of runners. There were 185 participants in all (some individuals and many groups) on the five courses, with many coming back for a second or even a third course. The lines to registration, start, and download were at times longer than we would have liked, while our impromptu instructors were busy giving beginners a basic introduction to orienteering. For us seasoned orienteers, it was a pleasure to see so many newcomers being excited about getting out in the woods, and so many smiling faces coming back.

The meet couldn’t have happened without the many helpers, both the ones that had signed up to help in advance and the ones that stepped up when realizing that a helping hand was needed. Many thanks to Jim Paschetto, Jim Crawford, Ian Finlayson, Richard and Naomi Schapiro, Richard Powers, Bridget and Kristin Hall, Dave Yee, Barb Bryant, Tim Parson, Dean Sturtevant, Mark Webb, Patrick McNeal, and Bud O’Leary. I hope I haven’t forgotten somebody in the general craziness of the day!

We hope that you all enjoyed today’s event and will come back to another orienteering event later this year. The orienteering season has just started and there will be many opportunities to get out in the woods.
