The New England Orienteering Club

Menotomy Rocks Park, Arlington, MA
April 20, 2014
Meet Directors: Ethan & Kristin Hall

The weather was perfect, the undergrowth and poison ivy were almost non-existent, and the park was bustling.  More than 60 people participated, including a few locals who just happened upon the event.

The white and yellow courses were popular, with a number of runners deciding to complete a second course after finishing. Thanks to the Finlayson-Johnecheck family, they also featured bonus stashes of plastic Easter eggs, which could be returned to the finish and exchanged for chocolate ones. (Janet Breslau - the computer did not record a time for your second run, on yellow.  If you also self-timed, let us know how long it was.)

To create a longer course at Menotomy is tricky, so we went with a five-lap score course (as created by Lori Huberman at Hammond Pond a few years back).  And for an extra challenge, and extra points, runners could choose to do any lap by memory, studying the map at the start and then running without it.  Kudos to Isabel Bryant and Ian Smith, who both managed to get all 15 controls, and to do all five laps by memory.  And also Kudos to Michael Commons and Patti Miller, who decided that enjoying the woods was more important than points:  although they did not finish under the Score-O time limit, they did complete all of loops 2-5!

A huge thank you to our many volunteers for all their help with set up, registration, start, finish, control pick-up and clean up: Jim P., Jim C., Raina, Gabe, Dean, Ian S., Ian F., Wendy, Mori, Bridget, Dave, Isabel, Xavier.

Things I learned as a meet director today:

  1. The penalty for overtime could be a bit less steep - perhaps the average control point value (which would have been 3 today) per minute, instead of the highest.
  2. One does not need seven packages of cookies for a smallish-local meet, whatever one's 14 year old child may say in the supermarket aisle.
  3. Apply a lot of sunscreen.

Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the sunshine today.
