Update 6/3/13, 10:06 PM - correction of results on the "Gnarly" course places Isabel Bryant 4th.

On a beautiful day in June, we held two score-O races in Breakheart Reservation. There was an advanced two-hour “Gnarly” race with navigational challenges including sections of the map missing trails and/or rock features, and a line-O. (The line-O was a curving line marked on the map; competitors followed it to find six controls placed along the route.) The beginner/intermediate course (the “Quest”) had a one-hour time limit. For both races, controls had different point values - between 2 and 6 points. Competitors were encouraged to work together in teams. One of the nice things about this format, as Peter Gagarin pointed out, is that everyone finishes at the same time. It is much more of a social opportunity than the typical events where you might miss another club member who finishes at a different time. We also had a warm-up map. This was available to teach beginners about orienteering, and for the elites to prepare for their race. It was also a great way to introduce curious passers-by to the sport. We had quite a few newcomers to orienteering at this meet.

The event was a fundraiser for the Junior Team that will be competing for the USA at the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) July 1-6 in the Czech Republic. A number of NEOC members are involved with the team. Isabel Bryant, Meg Parson and Carl Underwood are team members. Dan O’Leary is on the US Development Team and will be traveling and training with the team in the Czech Republic. Anna Shafer-Skelton will be helping to coach. One of the best things about putting on a meet is working with some great meet helpers. We are especially grateful to juniors Isabel Bryant, Ethan Childs, Meg Parson, Dan O’Leary, Raina Crawford -- and ex-junior Andrew Childs -- for all their help. Ian Smith, Bud O’Leary and Dan came out the day before to hang controls. Bud, Dan, Isabel and Tim Parson hung controls the morning of the meet. Andrew, Ethan, Dan, Bud and Jim helped with control pickup. Bud, Dan and Janet Swartz provided snacks and ran registration. Joanne Sankus provided additional help and transported all the equipment for the next event. Raina Crawford and Jim Paschetto handled the electronic punching with their usual aplomb, even dealing with the complicated scoring.
