Turtle Pond Event Results
(Turtle Pond, part of Stony Brook Reservation in Hyde Park, MA)
Event Director: Peter Amram
September 15, 2012
The Turtle Pond woods, part of the Stony Brook Reservation, was originally O-mapped in 1990 and used in 2005 for a mass-start sprint the day before the Blue Hills Traverse. The meet involved some map updates and two courses of about 3 kilometers each to give participants some of the zig-zag, quick-decision aspect of a classic A-meet sprint combined with enough horizontal length to make for a satisfactory trek, or two, at a local event. Attendance was relatively light, perhaps because of mid-morning, if short-lived, rain, and also because pre-race postings that emphasized a potential parking squeeze at this unknown venue.
Thanks to Jeff Saeger for help with the O-maps and OCAD; Jim Crawford and his 11th-grade daughter Raina for bringing all the gear and handled electronics; Bo Nielsen and Ian Smith for setting further controls, which were later cleared by Jeffs Saeger and Shapiro. Many NEOC Board members and regulars, including Pete Lane, Andy McIlvaine, Joanne Sankus, and Bill Binette, among others, handled administration. The Meet Director was free to meet personally with runners at the Start and to listen to post-run analyses at the nearby Finish.
