Menotomy Rocks

Guestwritten by Ali Crocker: It was lovely, sunny day to start off the fall orienteering season at Menotomy Rocks, Arlington, MA. The park itself is quite small, but has an interesting assortment of cliffs and trails spread over one big hill and a few sub-nobbles. To fully utilize the park and get everyone back into the orienteering swing of things, meet director and course setter Ian Smith set a white and 2 sprint courses.
This setup let everyone choose their own adventure, with the beginners able to start out on the white and then try one of the two sprint courses (at some level between yellow and orange) if all went well. The experts, on the other hand, could do both sprint courses, heading out for revenge on the second if the first one didn't quite go as planned... The level of the white course also let a few of our young juniors head out on a course navigating by themselves for the first time – a cool thing to see!
Out of the 11 individuals/teams on White, Isaac Shapiro sped away with it, completing the 0.8k in just 4:11. On the advanced sprints, Dancho Hristov completed both courses in over a minute faster than second-place finisher Ian Finlayson. There was interesting consistency in the top places for the two sprints- the top 5 places didn't change at all!
Like all meets, volunteers were crucial. In addition to meet directing and course setting, Ian Smith ran results for most of the race, with the second shift adopted by Magnus Bjorkman. Joel Gould and I welcomed and registered folks, providing beginner instruction and review for a few groups. Alex Jospe, Ian Smith, Magnus Bjorkman and I picked up controls while Ed Despard and Jim Crawford helped take down the registration area. All in all a great day and hopefully everyone's skills are tuned on up for the season! Thanks to all the volunteers for their time and to participants for coming out!
